The need for girlfriends
I've spent the last year on a journey of self-discovery - focusing on what brings me happiness and where I find fulfillment. One of my first, and simplest, realizations has been my need for girlfriends.
For the last 10 years, girlfriends have been my last priority. This was never intentional, it just became inconvenient and even burdensome to step out of my routine and put forth the effort required to develop friendships. Albeit banal, I found comfort and ease with my mundane lifestyle. It wasn't until my divorce that I truly grasped the importance of girlfriends, and wished I had cultivated such while I was married. Not so I could have friends to fall back on, but because I quickly learned that girlfriends filled a niche my husband could never fill. A niche husbands were never meant to fill.
As I began spending time with great women, I found myself coming home rejuvenated and completley fulfilled. Conversation and laughter always led to edification and enlightenment, and while developing these "inconvenient" relationships I discovered a certain fulfillment that could only be attained through the ladies in my life.
I decided women need an excuse to leave the house and an easy outlet to cultivate friendships. A monthly craft night fit the bill. I've sat on this idea for months, feeling inadequate and intimidated at the thought of putting such projects together. Until now. Thanks to my friend Jenn, I'm ready to give it a try. She's creative to boot, and generous with her time and talents. She has taken the reigns on our first project, and I couldn't thank her enough.
Leave the dishes for your husband and DVR your favorite shows. Escape the mundane and indulge in a few hours with the great women of your life. You'll be glad you did.
